Last blog I told you that Instagram doesn’t show up in Google Analytics. If you didn’t know this, you would go through all the trouble of getting your account set up and then think it didn’t work at all and you’d wasted your time because nothing would be showing. Well, there’s a way to make it show up and it’s very simple.
The UTM Source Code
There is a simple little code you can add to your link that will track that link from wherever it comes from, be it Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Simply add ?src=instagram. Say I have a post https://theroadtointernetsuccess.com/how-to-google. If I wanted to track how much traffic was coming from Instagram, I’d add the code on the end like this; https://theroadtointernetsuccess.com/how-to-google?src=instagram. Awesome, right? It won’t change what page on your website it takes you to. You can add anything you want to track at the end of your link after the equal sign. ?src=twitter, ?src=facebook. Now it will show up in Google Analytics. (And it doesn’t need to be in bold, I just did it so you would see what was added.)
Sometimes these URLs can get pretty long and ugly, so use a URL shortener and shorten the URL. Popular ones are Pretty Link, Bit.ly, or Clkim. I recommend Pretty Link because you have control over how your URL looks and the fact that it is a WordPress plug-in. Go here to learn more about Pretty Link.
Monitor Your Traffic
Now you can go to Google Analytics and monitor your traffic from Instagram. Remember you won’t see todays traffic until tomorrow. To find it, you’ll have to do a little bit of searching. It won’t be in your audience overview.
- Open Google Analytics
- Click on “Reporting” tab
- Click on “Behavior”
- Click on “Site Content”
- Click on “Landing Pages”
- There you can “search” Instagram
Then you’ll be able to see Instagram in your Google Analytics dashboard
